About Us
With the encouragement of the Mississippi Library Commission, Progress Community Library opened January 4, 1965. Charlotte Fortinberry was appointed as first librarian, followed in 1969 by Mary Lou Schilling and in 1972 by Floy Schilling. The first library was housed in part of an old school building. The library was unique in that it was combined with a school, with both being in a remote rural area. Ten years later, a new library building was constructed nearby with funds from the Pike County Board of Supervisors. The new library was named the Alford-Schilling Memorial Library in honor of Mary Lou Schilling and George Howard Alford. Progress and Magnolia libraries share the same dedication date: September 7, 1975. A small group of dedicated individuals can accomplish much. That was the philosophy of Friends of Progress Libraries, Inc., and the 1991 Golden Book Award from the Mississippi Library Association. Mrs. Cailtin Thames currently serves as the branch librarian.
